My favorite way to add to my CD collection is going to thrift stores. You never know what you’re going to find, and sometimes a 99-cent CD comes with a story.
I found Jann Arden’s Living Under June at a Goodwill in Hinesville, Georgia, home of Fort Stewart and the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. Hinesville is a bigger town than where I live and about a 30-minute drive away, so I don’t get there all the time.
On this particular trip, my dad was having a procedure at the dermatologist, and I had some time to kill while I waited. Naturally, that led me to Goodwill to see what I could find in the CD section.
That’s where I spotted Living Under June.
The price? 99 cents.
That made the find even better because my radio wife Sharon — @viking.diaries on Instagram — had just played Jann Arden on her show. So, of course, while I was sitting in the car waiting for Dad, I sent Sharon a picture of the album and told her how much it set me back.
She was astounded.
And that’s part of what I love about collecting physical music. Every CD has the potential to come with a story. This one happened to involve a trip to Hinesville, waiting on Dad at the dermatologist, a stop at Goodwill, a 99-cent price tag, and a connection to a song a friend had recently played.
Stories like this don’t come from algorithms.
